Song of the Earth

First performed in Stuttgart and set to Mahler's symphonic song cycle, Song of the Earth is a ballet which contemplates mortality and the presence of death. Kenneth Macmillan was inspired to choreograph movement to the words of the songs which are sung in German and have been translated from eighth century chinese poems.

From the words of Kenneth himself, 'A man and a woman; death takes the man; they both return to her and at the end of the ballet, we find that in death there is a promise of renewal.'
